EARNING another opportunity with the Fiji Bati at Rugby League World Cup 2026 remains one of the biggest goals for North Queensland Cowboys development player Ronald Philitoga.

But for now his full focus is on performing consistently each week and letting his football do the talking.

After being part of the Fiji Bati squad during last year’s Pacific Championships campaign, the exciting winger hopes strong performances this season can put him back in contention for international selection.

“Hopefully yes, if I’m able to be in that squad, then I’m able to,” Philitoga said when asked about representing Fiji again at the World Cup.

“But at the end of the day, I’ve got to keep putting my best foot forward week in and week out, play good footy and see what happens next.”

The 24-year-old outside back is currently part of the Cowboys development squad for the 2026 season and continues to build his reputation as one of the emerging players coming through the Queensland pathways system.

Born in Sydney and eligible to represent Fiji, Philitoga has worked his way through several pathways to place himself closer to an NRL opportunity.

Prior to joining the Cowboys, he spent time with the Brisbane Broncos under a train-and trial arrangement before moving to Wynnum Manly Seagulls in the Queensland Cup.

His strong form during the 2025 season attracted attention after scoring 11 tries in 14 matches while averaging 133 running metres per game, performances that earned him a development contract with the Cowboys.

This season, Philitoga has continued to impress while playing with Northern Pride and is strengthening his push for future NRL selection.

While he hopes an NRL debut will come soon, the winger remains patient and focused on improving.

“Hopefully. I’m just trying to play consistent footy and put my best foot forward,” he said.

“I’m working on my weaknesses and continuing to do what I’m good at. If the time comes, the time comes.”

With Papua New Guinea preparing to enter the NRL competition in 2028, Philitoga was also asked whether he would consider becoming part of the new franchise.

However, the young winger said he was not looking too far ahead.

“I’m not really thinking too far into the future. Whatever comes, comes,” he said.

“But I’m sure they will be a great outfit when they enter the competition.”
