From Api Koroisau's leadership to Solomone Saukuru's lethal finishing, the Wests Tigers' influence on Fiji's World Cup bid has been there for all to see.

Throw in 300 run metres from the 'Minister for Energy' Sunia Turuva and you have a powerful Tigers presence that is helping give the Bati belief they can down the Kiwis and progress to the semi-finals.

The Bati went blow for blow with world champions Australia at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday night and threatened a monumental upset before the Kangaroos' class prevailed 36-22.

Irrespective of the result, Fiji's performance against Australia has 'raised eyebrows' according to coach Mick Potter, who is now firmly focused on Saturday's clash against New Zealand on the Gold Coast.

"I thought they showed courage, they showed they can play footy," Potter said.

"We are still in it, we have New Zealand coming up, so that will be a massive challenge.

"It's tough, but it wasn’t meant to be easy. It’s going to be hard for everyone."

Coming off a double in the tournament opener against Cook Islands, 21-year-old Saukuru again showed flashes of brilliance against the Kangaroos.

After bursting onto the scene with a double in his NRL debut against the Dragons in Round 24, Saukuru crossed again in the upset win over the Roosters in Round 25 to serve notice of his potential.

He already boasts four tries in four Test and is revelling in the opportunity to pull on the national jumper alongside his club captain Koroisau.

"It’s always good putting on that Bati jersey again. For me personally, it’s about representing my people back home, my family, my village, it just means a lot," said Saukuru.

"It’s really special for all of us to represent Fiji and make them proud.

"Api has been great for me. He’s a quality player and leader.

"He set up my first NRL try, which made him even more special.

"It’s good when we come into these camps, we already have that connection."

They may have fallen short on the scoreboard at Suncorp Stadium, but their performance against Australia reinforced the growing confidence within the camp.

"Our advantages came from our want and our belief, turning up for one another. Things just happen when you are in that kind of mood," Koroisau said.

"We were feeling really good, and I don’t think we were that far off in the last 10-15 minutes. We were still in the game.

"I think we showed by the way we played that first half what we are willing to do in this jersey.

"And I think that belief will only grow going into this game against New Zealand."
